The Death Blow of the NCAA 🔨😵
A Nail in the Amateurism Coffin
A nail in the coffin today for the NCAA's amateurism model.
It's the biggest step we've ever seen by the NCAA to admit that these athletes, and many others, were wronged.
The NCAA has been in court for a really long time, a couple of decades in fact. But the heat has really been on over the last few years. In fact, the reason that NCAA 25 video game is the most popular one out right now is because Ed O'Bannon won his suit against the NCAA in EA Sports years ago.
NCAA Football 14 sold 1.5 million copies.
Last week, over 2.2 million bought EA College Football 25's early-access deluxe edition alone.
After a decade without a college football video game, millennial fans of the old games and Gen-Z first-timers are driving huge early sales ⬇️

But this new suit has billions of dollars in damages that will be back paid to athletes and will set the foundation for the future of paying athletes directly through schools.
If you are interested in learning more, Mit Winter is a great follow on Twitter for all things and has broke down the lawsuit step by step.
3 shifts that I see for the future of college athletics:
1. Recruiting will simplify. In some ways, it’s simpler now. “What’s your #?” This is now much more like a contract negotiation. And while dollars are not everything: the right fit, other opportunities, …etc. will still be there.
The elaborate photoshoots and costumes done every recruiting weekend will slow down. Grown men tracking down every 15 year old recruit will slow down.
Relationships will still matter, but there will be less emphasis on it.
Facility spending will drastically reduce. When you have a free labor force and make hundreds of millions of dollars, you have to put that money somewhere to carefully show that you’re not making a profit. When you couldn’t overtly pay players, you built Taj Mahals on every campus. Those days are not gone, but they will slow.
Women’s Sports will get a big boost: both in pay & support. The way that Title IX will affect universities controlling a pay roll is yet to be determined. Many people predict it will be divied out based on revenue incoming. But there’s a chance, schools generously interpret that for every dollar paid to a male athlete, they pay one to a female athlete. The next few years could be a windfall for female college athletes.
Education & Resources:
TONIGHT, the Brand Brothers are doing an evening Live Stream where we will workshop the Future of Creators X Brands working together.
Each week, we go LIVE to discuss the latest in Marketing & Branding. You can tune in through YouTube on my channel, LinkedIn or on Twitter Spaces.
If you want to grow your career or personal brand to maximize your impact, check out my Branding + Blessings workshop. Is $249 a lot for this workshop? IDK. What’s it costing you to not have an understanding of branding, a strategy to excute, or to have real impact in the lives of those around you?
Blessings:
How often do you stop and reflect on your week? My friend, John Olinger, is one of the most intentional people I know.
His newsletter last week reminded me to stop and assess the week through Wins, Losses & Opportunities. He even walked me through it in a 2 min video.
I had way more WINS than it felt like.
