A Masterclass at The Masters

on Marketing & Manhood

Marketers miss the mark… a lot. This is often due to the desire to be different no matter the cost.
Marketers live for novelty. By definition, they are trying to capture attention, and the novel often does the trick.
Red Bull has built a whole brand on novelty: kickflip over the tallest building with a parachute and land in the ocean. Break the sound barrier while drinking an energy drink- SICK!

As sports marketers, we often forget that we are working w/ the BEST athletes in the World. (top amateur, college & pro)

We don’t know a lot about Scottie Scheffler. He’s not super active on social or in the media, although we’re getting more insight into the man as he keeps winning. More on that in a moment.

Sometimes, we take the skills of athletes for granted. We spend so much time trying to tell their story or looking for the next media trick (AI! AR FIlters!) that we overlook their original superpower: their skill in sports.

TaylorMade has given us Scottie’s most viral moment on social. They’re a small but mighty content team: one of the best in the biz. But in this moment, they simply captured one of Scottie’s golf superpowers: predicting his yardages. This is brilliant for two reasons: 1. it shows off Scottie’s skill, preparation and smarts. 2. It ties directly to Taylor Made’s product.

Sometimes, the star of the show should be their skill in sport. After all, it’s our original introduction and for most of us… the original affection.

On Manhood at The Masters

Perhaps Scottie's greatest contribution this week is in the reminder of manhood and what all of us could learn.

1. "Golf is something I do, not who I am."
When our identity is tied to our profession, we are tethered to an outcome. This makes for a terrible temperament and a fickle foundation.
I worked tirelessly to try and not have my work be my identity. It’s a constant battle, but when won, it can lead to winning where it truly matters. For more on that, join my friend John’s newsletter who reminds us to Win Where It’s Worthy.
Scottie has said his identity is in Christ, and his victory was won on the cross.

2. When he forgets this, his friends remind him of who he is & what he believes. They help him temper his deep desire to win.

3. He's proud of his wife, excited to be a father and openly declared he'd fly home if she went into labor.

In a world of swiping right & left, where infinite choice is offered constantly, statistics would support that a married man with children AND friends is significantly happier.
All of this makes for a dangerous trinity (pardon the pun) for a competitive athlete on his way to a second Green Jacket. We’ll see how many more he wins.
And if he doesn’t?
He’ll still be satisfied.
His victory has already been won.
