One Lesson from Their Death By A Thousand Paper Cuts

Nike lost the plot the moment Tracksmith was hitting it’s stride.

On the exact same day that Tracksmith launched one of the most beautiful running films (ads) I’ve seen in a long time, Nike was doing something quite different.
Tracksmith launched one of their most engaged clips ever. It’s moving, quite literally. It makes me want to go outside and run.

Remember when Nike did that for you?

On the very same day that Tracksmith was inspiring people, Nike hired an influencer to convince people to like running. (No shade to the young woman.) The copy was “I love my Invincible 3s. I can wear them for a run, then go run my errands.” 🤮

There is nothing inherently wrong with this statement…if you’re an athleisure brand trying to be practical and appeal to a wide audience.
BUT WHAT IF YOU’RE THE BRAND BUILT on “We Run From the Front with Guts”?

As sports & athleisure brands get caught in the same space, the sports brands tend to lose their identity trying to appeal to a wider audience.
It’s no wonder Nike had it’s worst day on the stock market in 20 years.
In the chase for a new audience, it’s important to keep our brand voice strong…or at least near where we started. Brands can evolve the same as people, but competitive people don’t lose their edge. And while they may need something inspiring, they definitely don’t need convincing to love their sport.

This is one of 5 main factors behind the decline of the Swoosh.
