A Simple Framework for You
Complaining about Marketing Deals is a terrible way to get them.
Last week, I heard Grant Holloway, Gold Medalist hurdler & one of America’s best athletes, complain that he doesn't have a watch deal.
Check out the quote below:
These quotes really drive me crazy because it's a victim stance & top athletes are usually better than that. There's no one to blame for not having a watch deal other than Grant (or his marketing agents) in this instance!
Grant has a decent social media following, but he's not leveraging it effectively.
His tagline is “Google Me”. Nahhhh, that’s why no one knows you! His Story highlights are all smiley faces.
His sports content is great-all pulled from broadcast or fancy AP photographers, but very little BTS or a personal perspective on all of these events!
His paid partnership content lacks intentionality and premium quality, especially when compared to his more successful branded partnerships like Adidas.
For more premium partnerships like watches, Grant should focus on being more intentional with his content. AKA: hire a videographer or photographer to help. Aspirational brands want aspirational content.
To improve his brand, Grant needs to clarify what he stands for and who he is, using a structured brand plan framework. This includes identifying what he is NOT (e.g., not a loud or boisterous personality liek Noah Lyles) and defining what he wants to be known for, such as his work ethic and passion for footwork or fitness.
One of the biggest challenges with Grant was finding anything about his personal life. It’s fine for athletes to have privacy, but we connect with people through Story and brands sign people that connect with their audience.
By aligning with brands that resonate with his interests and background, like two watches he has been seen wearing- G-Shock and Whoop -for his fitness interests, Grant could build better brand partners. A clear brand identity will not only enhance his visibility but also attract targeted partnerships and opportunities.
Overall, focusing on a clear, intentional brand strategy is necessary if Grant wants to advance secure valuable deals like those of his better known peers!
